The engine was recently rebuilt, Trans and Differential recently rebuilt as well. Work on the car has been completed by an all-professional team of vendors and shops as directed by American Ponies, a private restoration organization. Tony Branda, SAAC, and other Shelby specialists have provided technical support, and/or parts. The car has less than 100 miles since completion and is in what we consider the 'shake-down' stage. This Mustang GT350H is ready to be driven, shown, admired and enjoyed for years to come and will make a fine addition to any garage.This car has had a careful ground up restoration and detailing to be a drivable yet very high-grade representative of the 1966 Shelby GT350 Hertz model. Though Not 100% true to the original Shelby GT350's, care was taken with the car to use correct components in every opportunity, providing a realistic appearance and driving experience with some emphasis on low maintenance and safety. The very straight and solid body was completely stripped and fitted with a Dynacorn steel frame hood before being painted in the Black and Gold Hertz paint scheme. All new gaskets and seals were installed with new windshield glass and correct Shelby plexiglass quarter windows. New stainless glass trim and windshield wiper arms were installed along with new bumpers and overriders. A new fuel tank, fuel lines, brakelines and wire harnesses were fitted followed by a completely new interior top to bottom. An AM/FM slide bar stereo with I-pod connection from CustomAutoSound was installed in the dash along with new stereo in-dash speaker. Details like the Shelby dash mounted tachometer, new full gauge panel, and Shelby Lap belts were given care to be correct and functional. All lighting has been replaced with new assemblies, lenses, and bulbs.Under the hood of this example is a freshly rebuilt .030 over 289, built to A code spec's with a warmer Comp Cams hydraulic cam eliminating the mechanical lifter maintenance issues. Topped by an Edelbrock intake manifold and new Holley 715cfm S2M LeMans carb. A correct Cobra air cleaner, hollow letter valve covers and high capacity T-pan are installed. The motor has been fitted with a Ford Motorsports windage tray and Ford high volume oil pump. Ignition is Pertonix electronic with rev limiter and matching chrome coil. Exhaust is handled by new Hedman Elite headers in black ceramic and flowing into a 2.5 all stainless steel Magnaflow exhaust system with X-pipe and quiet mufflers exiting chromed stainless down-turn tips. A new alternator with correct Shelby pulley and spacers, new starter, new battery, cables and solenoid, along with a correct new windshield washer bag and pump detail the engine bay. A new 3-row radiator, hoses, flex fan, and correct fan shroud make the car parade ready.View underside pics here.Only four Shelby 4-speed examples of the Hertz GT350 were originally built, as well as the automatics that Hertz selected, and this car was patterned after them. A new clutch was installed with correct Shelby pedal linkage. The transmission is a freshly rebuilt David Kee Toploader with close ratio gears and a new Hurst Competition Plus shifter and linkage. The driveshaft and joints are completely new and balanced by Drivelines NW. The Rear axle was rebuilt with a new 3.25 ratio Trac-Loc positraction.The suspension is Mustangs Plus Grab-a-Track system featuring 620lb front springs and matching mid-eye rear springs. New control arms and the Shelby specification 1 dropped upper control arms, urethane bushings and gas shocks work with a 1 front sway bay to make the car handle excellent. Shelby under-ride traction bars are installed in back, and an Export Brace with Monte Carlo bar stiffens the front end. The Brake master cylinder is new and updated to a dual reservoir for safety.A new fast ratio steering box with Shelby Quick-Steer arms make for heavy parking lot steering but very good road manners once rolling. A real Moto-Lita steering wheel is fitted, made in England like the originals. The car rolls on new chrome 15 Magnum wheels with Hertz caps and 225/60R-15 BFG Comp TA's. The trunk is detailed with correct hardboard panels, trunk mat, jack and jack handle.After being introduced for the 1965 model year, the Ford Mustang had very quickly become the apple of the sports car world's eye, with sales dwarfing virtually every competitor and spawning a number of variants. The Mustang's wild popularity can be attributed to styling and performance. In 1965 the Shelby Mustang came to life with the introduction of the high-performance Shelby GT350. As Ford puts it, The idea was to put high-performance, special-edition Shelby Mustang coupes into the hands of racing enthusiast-minded rental customers. That's right, if you were a Hertz Sports Car Club member back in 1966 (and 25 years of age), you could drive off the rental car lot in a performance 306 hp Mustang fastback. Total cost: $17 a day and 17 cents a mile.
